Controlling magnetic anisotropy in nickel films on LiNbO3

•A well-defined, uniaxial, magnetic anisotropy is induced by post-deposition anneal.•The magnitude of the induced anisotropy can be controlled by annealing temperature and measurement temperature.•A simple equation predicts the magnitude of the anisotropy field, provided strains do not exceed the elastic limit of the film.
