•The effects of alkali halides on amyloids dissolution are classified into three types.•Dissolution ability of alkali halides for amyloids depends on the competition between the direct and indirect effects.•LiI showed a strong dissolution ability for amyloids.•The monomer protein was successfully recovered from amyloids dissolved in LiI after desalting.
