•AlMo0.5NbTa0.5TiZr alloy was prepared by laser-directed energy deposition (L-DED).•The L-DED and vacuum arc melting (VAM) alloys were compared for the first time.•The L-DED alloy has a higher microhardness than the VAM alloy.
