The monitoring of bridge under complex illumination based on digital image technology

•A new binarization method is provided for bridge displacement monitoring in engineering practice.•The new method expands the threshold selection range by 13–55 times compared with the global threshold method.•The new method can realize the adaptive threshold under different illumination.•The new method can recognize the markers under uneven illumination.•The experimental results show that the new method has high precision.
