•The Semi-Analytical Method (SAM) is simple and original to determine principal strains.•Strain from SAM follows the pattern of the circumferential strain obtained by FEM.•Close to the dome, strain from SAM approximates both radial and circumferential FEM strains.•New methodology to identify hyperelastic behaviors of biological membrane tissues.
