The frost heave characteristics of a coarse-grained volcanic soil quantified by particle image velocimetry

•A series of frost heave tests were carried out on a volcanic coarse-grained soil.•Various factors influence the frost heave behavior of the studied soil.•Temperature gradient is the driving force for pore water and vapor migration.•PIV is able to accurately quantify the full field deformation of the studied soil.
