•Knockdown of the expression of DhFIG_2 in Dactylellina haptotyla, a nematode-trapping fungus (NTF) using an adhesive knob to capture nematodes, significantly decreased its conidiation and knob formation.•DhFIG_2 is involved in responding to diverse stresses.•RNA interference was applied to study gene function in NTF for the first time.
