•Used latent class analysis to examine the socio-ecological context of college drinking.•Four classes differed in consumption, how and where they drank, and consequences.•Classes varied in demographics, campus activities/connectedness, & protective behaviors.•Results can be used to develop and tailor harm reduction interventions.
