Psychosocial problems and high amount of opioid administration are associated with opioid dependence and abuse after first exposure for chronic pain patients

•Among chronic pain patients, 5.5.% developed opioid dependence and/or abuse after the first exposure to opioids.•From chronic pain patients who are prescribed opioids for the first time, 30.5% received more than 50 MMEs per day.•Multiple factors increase the likelihood of patients developing dependence and/or opioid abuse after the first exposure.
