•Organic swelling pre-treatment produces swollen and delaminated PCBs fractions.•The morphological change of PCBs during the organic swelling reaction was visible.•Copper concentrates with over 80% copper contents were obtained.•Coarse PCB particles-based value recovery could be developed with organic swelling.
