The complex and dynamic metabolic interactions between neurons and their neighbouring cells provide an exciting and contested field in contemporary neuroscience. Non-neuronal cells, most prominently among them astrocytes, participate directly in neuronal energy metabolism in such a way that important metabolic pathways can only be completed with the synergistic action of fundamentally differing cell types. Starting with the historical roots of this field, the fundamental principles of inter-cellular metabolism are described and extended into contemporary models of neuronal-glial energetics. In this updated article, established and controversial concepts are included with emphasis on unresolved questions, activity-dependent metabolic transitions, novel methodologies, and, most important, novel results and concepts.
