Comparative study of interzeolite transformed metallosilicates for the chemisorption of benzene, toluene, and xylenes

Abstract
Zeolitic metallosilicates with Lewis acidity are effective in the chemisorption of benzene, toluene, and xylenes (BTX) because of the strong pi-interactions between the Lewis acid sites and BTX adsorbates. In this study, we prepared boro-, nickel-, and zincosilicate delMWW (two-dimensional delaminated MWW) and beta zeolite (*BEA) adsorbents by using the interzeolite transformation method and compared them with their mother MWWs for BTX chemisorption. Different structural properties, framework-atom species, and hydroxyl and Lewis acid site concentrations were systematically characterized by using various analytical methods. Among the studied adsorbents, nickel silicate beta zeolite (Ni-BEA) exhibited the highest concentration of Lewis acid sites and a hydrophobic character because of the stable framework-bound Ni species. In addition, its advantageous textural properties, large pore size, high surface area, and nano-sized crystals, induced the highest chemisorption content and a strong chemisorption ability of BTX at high-temperature (120 degrees C) adsorption under humid conditions.
