Measurement and Optimization Methods of Energy Consumption for Microcontroller Systems Within IoT

This paper describes the classical techniques for measuring the energy consumption of microprocessor devices, smart devices and IoT devices (in the next referred as MCU). The aim is to assess the suitability, in particular the accuracy, of known methods for measuring MCU power consumption in order to optimize (minimize) it. The first stage of such optimization is solving the problem of correct and sufficiently accurate measurement of MCU power consumption during code execution. The analysis showed the shortcomings of the known techniques for measuring the current consumption of an MCU. This task is relevant, that since there are many MCU- based devices on the market, especially smart devices or IoT devices, and required a set of methods and tools to evaluate their effectiveness and the possible effectiveness for optimizing the executable code.
