Community, pastoralism, landscape: Eliciting values and human-nature connectedness of forest-related people

•We apply a relational values perspective to study forest-dwelling people.•Main community values are: sense of place, shared ways of thinking, rural identity.•Tradition, responsibility for animals, and income are important pastoral values.•Subsistence, stewardship, and aesthetics are key landscape values.•We call for forest conservation strategies to consider people’s deep relational values.
