•Coral-inspired polymer brushes are fabricated based on a hard/soft strategy.•Hard nanoporous substrates shield soft polymer brushes from being peeled off.•They exhibit excellent mechanical robustness and self-healing property.•They show outstanding durable broad-spectrum antifouling performance.•Potential chemical and physical mechanisms of foulants prevention are proposed.
