•Allophylus edulis is a native plant of the Brazilian cerrado.•The essential oil was obtained from two locations in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul.•The dominant components of essential oils were caryophyllene oxide and α-zingiberene.•Seasonal and spatial variation can influence the chemical composition of A. edulis essential oil.
