Low-profile Wideband Planar Dipole Antenna on Folded Ground Plane

This paper presents the design of low-profile wideband planar dipole antenna on folded ground plane. The proposed antenna has the characteristics of compact, low-profile, good impedance bandwidth and low machining cost. The proposed antenna is composed of planar dipole antenna, the dielectric substrate, microstrip Balun transformer, and a folded ground plane. The source antenna is a pentagonal printed planar dipole antenna. The forward gain of the antenna is enhanced by the design of the folded ground plane. At the same time, it makes the antenna radiate directionally and has a relatively regular beam pattern. The results show that the reflection coefficient of the antenna is less than -10 dB in the frequency range of 1.88 GHz to 4.04 GHz with a relative bandwidth of about 77%. The designed antenna also has a gain of over 3.5 dB at the frequency of 2.8 GHz.
