摘要
ObjectivesAt the conclusion of the Workshop, participants will be able to: 1) recognize the legacies of structural racism entrenched with traditionally Western biomedical research paradigms that continue to actualize in contemporary research practices; 2) identify the basic principles and examples of how community-based participatory research (CBPR) can be utilized to address structural racism in research practices; 3) select a CBPR principle to apply to an ongoing or developing research project that fosters empowerment and partnership with community organizations; and 4) develop an implementation plan for an ongoing or developing research project that includes a CBPR approach.MethodsThe Workshop schedule will be as follows: introductions; group reading of example case; vignette; small group breakout discussion; presentation: the what and why of CBPR - foundational CBPR principles; break; and sharing lived experiences of CBPR from 2 community leaders and researchers. The group will hear from 2 CBPR experts and community leaders who will share stories of benefits and challenges of various CBPR strategies, and we will give the participants an opportunity to ask the community leaders questions. The schedule continues with a question-and-answer session; and reflection exercise and developing an implementation plan. Participants will complete a handout that will provide a scaffolding for reflection on an ongoing and/or nascent research project. The reflection exercise will guide them in developing an implementation plan for a CBPR strategy with a small-group breakout discussion on reflection exercise and implementation plan. Participants will then be split into small groups differentiated by the phase of research. The session will end with a whole group share, and presentation from select, volunteer group members; and question-and-answer session and feedback.ResultsParticipants will gain insight into CBPR’s potential to enhance the equity and utility of mental health research involving historically marginalized communities and will have initiated a process of applying CBPR principles through specific and actionable plans for their research activities.ConclusionsCBPR is a powerful model of conducting research that alters historically racialized power dynamics between researchers and participants through enhancing community members’ voices and expertise.R, DEI ObjectivesAt the conclusion of the Workshop, participants will be able to: 1) recognize the legacies of structural racism entrenched with traditionally Western biomedical research paradigms that continue to actualize in contemporary research practices; 2) identify the basic principles and examples of how community-based participatory research (CBPR) can be utilized to address structural racism in research practices; 3) select a CBPR principle to apply to an ongoing or developing research project that fosters empowerment and partnership with community organizations; and 4) develop an implementation plan for an ongoing or developing research project that includes a CBPR approach.
