High-resolution facial expression image restoration via adaptive total variation regularization for classroom learning environment

•The difference between the low-resolution facial expression image and high-resolution one is revealed.•The distribution of wavelet transform coefficient of high-resolution image is sparser than that of low-resolution image.•The proposed method is conducted on the real facial images to validate its effectiveness.
