Surface crack detection of the abradable seal coating by laser bidirectional scanning thermography

•Laser bidirectional scanning thermography was introduced to detect the surface cracks of the abradable seal coating.•Distinguish between crack defects and non-defects by the attribute of directional difference of thermal signals.•The thermal image sequence normalization algorithm was introduced.•The effect of the difference in optical properties between coating surface phases is suppressed.
