•CVD-TaC alternate coatings with different crystallite morphologies were prepared.•Combination effect of TaC crystals greatly influences the ablative performance.•TaC coating with the sublayer of columnar crystals showed better ablation resistance.•TaC coating containing nanocrystals was damaged by superfluous gaseous products.
