•All as-prepared Mn-Mo/SEP achieved approximately 100% conversions of lignin.•Mn promoter favored the formation of oxygen vacancies.•The addition of Mn species inhibited the alkylation of intermediates.•The 3Mn1Mo/SEP possess the highest phenols selectivity and guaiacols yields.•The plausible reaction network for Lignin catalytic depolymerization was proposed.
