•A new joint experiment is designed for petrophysical evaluation in shale.•Dissolved methanol can be used to identify hydrogen components in shale.•1D/2D translational diffusion model is introduced for theoretical analysis of shale NMR mechanism.•A comprehensive interpretation scheme of shale is established based on T1/T2-T2 map.•Wettability and mobility characteristics of shale are provided through interpretation scheme.
