Prescribed fire after thinning increased resistance of sub-Mediterranean pine forests to drought events and wildfires

•Combining overstory and understory treatments resulted in more resistant forests.•Resistance ability more influenced by understory treatment than thinning intensity.•Mechanical treatments followed by burning more beneficial than mechanical only.•Prescribed burning after light or heavy thinning led to resistant forests.
