Farmland birds on forest clear-cuts: Liked by some, avoided by others

•Birds were counted on 300 forest clear-cuts over a large geographical area.•Several bird species typical to farmland were regularly found.•Their abundance depended on clear-cut age and size, and landscape characteristics.•Other farmland bird species clearly avoided forest clear-cuts.•The full significance of clear-cuts to farmland birds remains to be determined.
