•Sorghum is an important forage crop but contains the cyanogenic glucoside dhurrin.•Dhurrin content was highly variable over hybrids and production environments.•Dhurrin was stable in dry sorghum tissue samples over a two-month storage period.•Dhurrin in sorghum hay was readily released as HCN when treated with rumen fluid.
