•Wood extractives accumulate in a phosphine oxide-based acetic acid solvent.•Influence of wood extractives on the acetic acid extraction efficiency is studied.•Fatty acids and resin acids decrease the distribution coefficient and mass transfer.•Extractives can be removed using liquid-liquid back-extraction with aqueous amines.•N,N-Dimethylaminoethanol removes 99% of the extractives and is fully recyclable.
