•The main aromatic substances were ethyl acetate, ethyl butyrate, hexanal, octanal, and 2-nonenal.•Irrigation amount had a positive effect on the content of esters and yield.•Nutrient solution EC had a negative correlation on the content of esters and yield.•The optimal irrigation strategy was determined for irrigation areas with a high EC value.
