•A wire-plate electrostatic fog collector with 60% collection efficiency is proposed.•Fog droplets have a restriction effect on the charge transport in corona discharge.•Fog concentration, droplet size distribution and evaporation affect collection rate.•A superior performance coefficient of 388.8 kg/kWh is achieved.
