•An efficient buckling analysis and optimization method is proposed for rotationally periodic stiffened shells accelerated by Bloch wave method.•The theory derivation and implementation procedure of Bloch wave method for buckling analysis are presented.•Example results indicate the proposed method achieves high prediction accuracy and efficiency in buckling load and mode.
