Abstract
Hydrogen is arising as a low-carbon fuel alternative when produced via electrolysis paired with wind and solar, and the question arises on how to complement the power system infrastructure in the most cost-efficient way. In that context, multi-energy planning system models often overly simplify the operational details due to model complexity and computational tractability, especially the highly non-linear pipeline dynamics, making the obtained power system investments potentially invalid due to inappropriate link with slower gas dynamics. This paper proposes and evaluates several linear approximations of pipeline dynamics which can be included into the coordinated power and hydrogen system planning problem while maintaining the problem tractability. The performance is evaluated in comparison to the full non-linear model under various conditions, including different pipeline configurations and hydrogen demand scenarios.(c) 2023 Elsevier Ltd.
