Model-based predictive control optimization of chiller plants with water-side economizer system

•Modelica-based models of the water-side economizer system were developed.•A model-based predictive control approach was proposed to optimize operational parameters.•Energy consumption of chiller plants with hourly optimization was reduced by 14.3%.•A continuous optimization method was developed to avoid optimization initialization issues.•Effects of optimization parameters and frequencies on energy savings were identified.
