Operative mortality after Society of Thoracic Surgeons-European Association for Cardio-Thoracic Surgery Mortality Category 1 to 3 procedures is related to the presence of multifactorial risk patterns (Society of Thoracic Surgeons and non-Society of Thoracic Surgeons-designated patient-level risk factors and variables, broad risk categories, system deficiencies, emergency surgery). A multidisciplinary approach to care, with early recognition and treatment of modifiable additional burdens, could reduce this risk.
