A new look at the relations between attachment and intelligence

•We present a revised model of the relations between attachment and intelligence.•Intelligence affects attachment both in infancy/childhood and adulthood.•Ambivalent and disorganized children show lower intelligence on average.•Adults with preoccupied and unresolved states of mind show lower intelligence.•Intelligence likely contributes to the intergenerational “transmission gap”
