•Relaxation testing allows distinct evaluation of asphalt binder behavior.•Methodology is quick and simple, only requiring very few material quantity.•Dynamic shear rheometer with 4 mm parallel-plates is applicable.•Different test instruments show identical results and high precision.•Results correlate with traditional bending beam rheometer tests.
