•197 LWHSC mixes from past experimental studies are reviewed.•The influence of LWA characteristics on the behaviour of LWHSC is discussed.•A new equation for predicting oven dry density of LWHSC is proposed.•Correlations were proposed between w/b ratio and water reducer demand for LWHSC.•Existing correlations between mechanical properties must be improved for LWHSC.
