•NS can reduce the sensitivity of clinker content on the strength development of the SSC low-clinker-added samples.•The NS addition continuously increases the mechanical performance and promotes hydration of high-clinker added samples, especially in the later periods.•NS changes the morphology of hydrates but not apparently effects on porosity.
