•CuO/TiO2-ZrO2 wire-meshes calcined at different temperatures were synthesized.•The calcination temperature had an effect on the catalytic performances.•Migration of cu to the interior of the coating minimized its leaching.•The increment in the calcination temperature generated less reducible cu species.•The copper leaching influenced both phenol mineralization and H2O2 efficiency.
