•N2O formation is 100% inhibited in photocatalytic NOx reduction with carbon.•NOx and carbon particles are converted into N2 and CO2, respectively.•Z-scheme heterojunction enhanced charge transfer and photocatalytic reaction rate.•N2O is inhibited due to rapid charge separation and N2O adsorption on TiO2 surface.
