Responses of soil water-holding capacity to environmental changes in alpine ecosystems across the southern Tibetan Plateau in the past 35–40 years

•Decadal changes in soil water-holding capacity were assessed using field surveys.•Soil erosion and climate change decreased soil water-holding capacity.•The decline in soil water-holding capacity could exacerbate vegetation degradation.
