Abstract
•The Jaguar represents an atypical Ni deposit part of the Carajás IOCG system.•Trace elements in magnetite from the Jaguar deposit support a hydrothermal origin.•Pyrite and chalcopyrite have compositions that resemble IOA and IOCG deposits.•The Neoarchean mafic–ultramafic layered intrusions represent potential Ni sources.•Trace element results support that binary discriminant diagrams are not unequivocal.
