Microstructure and properties of the solid solution ceramic coating by high speed laser cladding

•The Solid solution ceramic coating was prepared by high speed laser cladding.•The additional TiB2 underwent a sufficient substitution reaction with ZrB2 to form (Zrx,Ti1-x)B2.•Compared to ZrB2, (Zrx,Ti1-x)B2 exhibited significant strengthening effect on the coating.•The strengthening mechanism of (Zrx,Ti1-x)B2 on the hardness and wear resistance of the coating was revealed.
