Evaluating determinants of wire-snare poaching risk in the Boland Mountain Complex of South Africa

•Reported snare incidence is not significantly different from patrol data.•Risk of snaring is highest where sites are relatively accessible and are nearer to settlements.•Owner/manager residency and agricultural output are linked to snaring pressure on farms.•An interdisciplinary approach provides insight into the dynamics of bushmeat poaching.
