•Seed priming with salicylic acid, ascorbic acid, NaCl, and polyethylene glycol improves wheat seed germination.•Seed priming improves seedling growth and vigor under simulated drought.•Seed priming enhances the activities of antioxidant enzymes in the seedlings under simulated drought.•Seed priming upregulates the glyoxalase system and detoxifies methylglyoxal.•Ascorbic acid provides a better defense to plants against drought stress.
