•DRAINMOD-Urban was tested by modeling the hydrology of four bioretention cells.•DRAINMOD-Urban performance was robust over multiple site conditions (e.g. clogging).•The model’s ability to represent overflow hydrographs was verified for the first time.•The model can be used to predict bioretention hydrology on a fine scale, continuous basis.
