•The NiCo2S4 NWs/N-rGO aerogel is prepared by a confined synthesis strategy.•The NiCo2S4 NWs/N-rGO achieves low overpotentials for both HER and OER.•A small cell voltage of 1.556V at 10 mA cm-2 is required for overall water splitting.
