Topology optimization of thin-walled structures with directional straight stiffeners

•A novel topology representation and optimization method for structures with directional straight stiffeners is proposed.•The straight stiffeners’ topology is represented by the superposition of multiple unidirectional material fields.•The number of design variables is significant reduced based on the MFSE model.•The characteristics of regular shape and topology are connected into optimization model without additional constraints.
