•Fe-Cu-Rh ternary alloy nanofibers are synthesized with varying Fe precursor wt%.•Fe incorporation into Cu-Rh plays a crucial role particularly in alkaline HER.•A Fe-Cu-Rh alloy with 65.5 atomic % of Rh presents a superb pH-universal activity.•A Fe-Cu-Rh alloy with only 18.5 atomic % of Rh catalyzes acidic HER very stably.
