Membrane sound absorber with a granular activated carbon infill

•Sound absorption by a combination of membrane absorber and activated carbon infill.•The theory is derived through the translation impedance theorem.•Activated carbon performs much better than an equivalent fiberglass infill.•Low-frequency sound absorption is improved with the use of activated carbon.•Experimental results are in good agreement with theoretical predictions.
