Abstract
Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is estimated to occur in 300,000 to 600,000 patients every year in the United States (U.S.) alone and is the third most common cause of vascular mortality worldwide1. Maternal health is especially adversely affected as the risk of VTE increases during pregnancy and peaks postpartum, accounting for 10% of all maternal deaths in the U.S. Most large-scale studies evaluating venous thromboembolism (VTE) after childbirth rely on administrative data, however, the accuracy of such data in identifying VTE is variable2.
